The Clackamas Girls Varsity soccer team traveled to Centennial High School and came away with an 8-1 victory in the face of a determined Eagle defensive line. The Lady Cavs scored first at the 8:49 minute mark when #4 Kiah Wetzell fed a perfect ball to #3 Aidan Brown, which she then buried in the back of the net. #16 Grace Barrett headed a well-placed cross from #14 Ava Peterson into the net for the second goal at 16:32. Eleven minutes later, Kiah Wetzell scored a solo goal on an exciting drive to beat the Eagles’ goalkeeper at 27:00. #23 Kyla Sullivan scored the final Cavs’ goal of the half at 30:36 culminating from a skillful solo run and a strong shot at which the goalkeeper had no chance. Sullivan’s strong performance in the first half exemplified the Cavs determination and skills.

The second half scoring started early as #3 Aidan Brown powered a 30-yard shot into the net at 1:27. She positioned herself with a strong solo run from the middle third. At 2:21 #14 Ava Peterson supplied Brown with a well-weighted ball in the six-yard box with which she defeated the goalkeeper using a shot to the corner of the net. #1 Paige Vancil scored with a shot from an excellent cross supplied by #2 Alyssa Welk with 4:20 left in the game. At 1:28 left in the game, an own goal was scored by the Eagles as Vancil received another superb cross on the front post from a corner kick and directed the ball into the net off a defender.

The goals scored during the match were impressive, to be sure, but they would not have been possible without the strong midfield and defensive play of the Lady Cavs. The aggressive and skillful game of midfielders, #10 Cecilia Coca-Aitken and #11 Chloe Hunt, provided the control and ball distribution that fueled the scoring effort. The defensive line stifled the Eagles’ drives at every turn and contributed actively to the whole team effort.
